The Governing Body of Ide Hill school comprises 14 people, 12 governors, 1 associate governor and a clerk. The Governing Body of any school has 3 main roles:
- ‘Critical friend’
Although not involved in the day-to-day running of the school, governors support and challenge the headteacher and staff. There are various types of governor: foundation (as Ide Hill is Voluntary Aided school these are people appointed by the Diocese or Parochial Church Council), LA appointed, Headteacher, Staff appointed governor, Parent elected governors and associate governors. The full Govering Body meets termly but smaller sub-committees, namely the Curriculum Committee, Finance and Premises, Marketing etc. also meet in between, either termly or more often as required.
Mrs Anne Fletcher
Chair of Governors
We are delighted that Anne Fletcher has been re-appointed as our Bishop's nominee and Chair of Governors, after a year of absence from the Governing Body.
Anne has served the school in many ways over the last 9 years as Chair, Deputy Chair and Foundation Governor.
Anne is the designated Safeguarding Governor and has a special passion for the Early Years Foundation Stage, as Anne ran the Ide Hill Village Pre-Shool very succesfully for many years.
Mrs Caroline Cain
Interim Executive Headteacher
Mrs Cain was appointed as Interim Executive Headteacher in October 2021. Mrs Cain has been a Headteacher for over 22 years and took her first Headteacher post at Platt Church of England Primary School in Sevenoaks. This was then followed by the role of Primary Excellence Project Headteacher, supporting the schools in the Swanley area. Mrs Cain joined New Ash Green Primary School as Headteacher in 2011. Prior to these leadership roles, Mrs Cain taught primary phase in Kent, London, York as well as in Japan! Mrs Cain's approach is that children will always remain the centre of what we do, whilst creating a team spirit within the school and working in partnership with the whole community. Through Mrs Cain's leadership, children are encouraged to excel by developing their curiosity, inspiration, resilience, as well as to challenge and drive their independence and self-motivation within a safe and caring environment. These core values form the bedrock of Mrs Cain's leadership, which celebrates cultures, diversity and individuality so that all of our children and the whole community are able to flourish.
Miss Jeanine Johnson
Acting Head of School
Miss Johnson was appointed to the Governing Body on the 18th of October by virtue of her position as Head of School. Miss Johnson has been a teacher at Ide Hill Primary School for almost 20 years and has extensive experience as a member of the school's Senior Leadership Team. Miss Johnson is the school's Key Stage 2 , RE and Music lead. Miss Johnson is responsible for leading the operations of the school on a day to day basis.
Mrs Louisa Hillman
Headteacher (currently on parental leave)
Louisa has been Headteacher at Ide Hill CE Primary since September 2014. As Headteacher,she is automatically a governor, but has enjoyed a governance role for many years whilst teaching within Kent and Sussex. Louisa is responsible for the organisation, management and strategic direction of the school. As such, it is her responsibility to implement the school improvement plan, and to collaborate with governors to monitor standards across the school.Louisa is also the Designated Safeguarding Lead at Ide Hill School.
Mr Richard French
Vice Chair of Governors
Appointed by the Sundridge with Ide Hill parochial Church Council, Richard joined the governing body in October 2010 having moved to Ide Hill when he retired.
On the Governing body, he is responsible for building development and involved in other school activities as a member of the Finance and Premises Committee. He has taken on the role of Vice Chair of Governors.
Prior to his retirement, Richard was a civil engineer and director for W S Atkins, managing projects and business activities in the UK and overseas. Since retirement, for the past 5 years, he has had a voluntary role with CAFOD (The Catholic Agency for Overseas Development) and co-ordinates the Schools Programme for the Archdiocese of Southwark. He is a Director of the Ide Hill Community Shop CIC and was the project manager for the building of the new shop in the village. He now acts as the financial director, company secretary and co-ordinates the volunteering.
Mr Ian Basden - Smith
Ian was appointed an associate governor in May 2014 and Local Authority governor in October 2014. Ian is a chartered accountant who worked for various city institutions during his career and retired from Deutsche Bank in 2010. Ian chairs the Finance & Premises Committee and is involved with a number of charities and is also treasurer of St Martin's church, Brasted.
Mr Miki Dan
Miki became a Parent Governor in October 2015. Upon expiration of this role, Miki became an Associate Governor and sits on the Finance and Premises Committee. He has one son at the school and another who recently left us and is now at secondary school. Miki lives in Westerham.
Miki has spent most of his career working in investment banking, advising on company sales. Having previously worked at organisations like Standard & Poor’s, E&Y, RSM and now with a local boutique advisory firm, Beer Mergers, Miki brings a sound financial and commercial outlook to the board. Miki is a keen tennis player and is Tennis Chairman at the Limpsfield LTC.
Mr Ben Purkiss
Foundation Governor appointed by the PCC
Ben is Headmaster at Caterham Prep School in Surrey, an independent primary school for children aged 3-11. Over the course of his career he has worked in a variety of schools, both primary and secondary, across Kent, Surrey and Sussex in pastoral and academic roles and serves as a Team Inspector for the Independent Schools Inspectorate. Ben sits on the strategy committee for independent prep schools and is passionate about developing teaching and learning strategies in the primary phase.
Mrs Sue Caskey
Sue was voted onto the governing body in April 2015. Having graduated from Nottingham University in 1996 with a degree in mathematics, she worked as a chartered accountant at PricewaterhouseCoopers for 13 years. Sue has two children who both attended the school and now enjoys being a stay-at-home mum.
For the many years, Sue was the treasurer of the PTA and book-keeper for Ide Hill pre school. She also helps at the school on a regular basis. In her spare time, Sue enjoys cooking, crafts and travel.
Mrs Helen de May
Helen de May was appointed to the Governing Body of Ide Hill CEP School by the Rochester Diocese Board of Education as a Foundation Governor in October 2016, and sits on the Teaching and Learning Committee. She has been a Classics teacher at Sevenoaks School since 2003, lives and goes to church in Sundridge, and has two children, one of which is at the school.
Mrs Judy Duffield
Judy Duffield was appointed to the Governing Body of Ide Hill CEP School by the Rochester Diocese Board of Education as a Foundation Governor in March 2014. She has lived in Westerham for many years and has recently retired from the teaching profession.
Over the course of the past 43 years in the profession she has worked in a variety of schools in London, Surrey and Kent, in a wide range of posts, her career culminating in the role of Head teacher of a primary school of 280 pupils. Currently she is Chair of Westerham Amateur Dramatics Society and is involved with its Youth Theatre Group. She is a member of the choir at St Mary's Church Westerham and she is also assists in the organisation of 'Messy Church' for the younger members of the congregation. She enjoys singing with a range of choral groups and visiting the theatre.
Ms Andrea Rowe
Andrea Rowe was appointed as a Parent Governor in October 2019. Andrea brings a wealth of compliance and audit experience to the school and sits on the Finance and Premises committee.
Andrea is currently enjoying being a full time mum, but prior to this held a career spanning 15 years in the financial sector working for Schroders Investment Management and The Bank of New York. Her career was within governance; holding roles as a Senior Internal Auditor, Compliance Officer and Fraud Risk Manager.
Andrea currently has three children at Ide Hill School.
Mr David Paton
Foundation Governor appointed by the PCC
David is the Executive Principal at Radnor House Sevenoaks having led the school as Head for the previous five years. Prior to this David was a Head Teacher in Twickenham and was instrumental in launching the Radnor House Group of Schools in 2010. Having completed a PGCE in Business Education, and more recently a Master in ICT in Education, David understands the evolving educational landscape and how technology plays a key role in future provision. Outside of education David is husband to Jo, a recently qualified primary teacher, has three young children and lives in Ide Hill village.
Mrs Sarah Critchlow
Foundation Governor appointed by the RDBE
Sarah is returning to the Ide Hill Governing body, after a previous stint of 16 years from 2000 to 2016. For the latter part of that time, Sarah was chair of the Teaching and Learning Committee. Sarah's four children all attended Ide Hill from the first arriving in 1998, to the last leaving in 2016. Over that time Sarah also volunteered in class and with many PTA events. Sarah has a great love for the school, hence her return this year to the Governing Body. Sarah has lived in Ide Hill, 200 metres from the school, since 1997, so brings the perspective of a neighbour too.
Sarah originally trained (at Homerton College,Cambridge) and worked as a primary school teacher (teaching in London and Essex) before taking a break to bring up her children. Sarah now teaches pregnancy and mum and baby yoga classes in the village, as well as volunteering in the Community Shop.
Ms Linda Melin
Miss Melin was elected Staff Governor in February 2022. She is a class teacher in Year 4 and is the subject leader for PSHE and Mathematics (jointly). Miss Melin has worked in education for 15 years, first as a teaching assistant and later on as a qualified teacher. She has two children who are currently attending university.
Ms Rachel Harland

Rachel joined Ide Hill Primary School as Bursar in 2012 and has clerked various committees throughout that time. Rachel become the Clerk to the Governing Body, including the Full Governing Body in January 2017. As Clerk, she is responsible for ensuring that all matters discussed within the governing body are documented and that it proceeds in an orderly and productive manner. She coordinates and prepares Governors’ meetings, as well as ensuring that policy documents are circulated and formally agreed.
